ESSENTIAL VOCABULARY This is the list of words that the science department has deemed to be the eleven most important words to know from sixth grade science. They are known as the "Essential Vocabulary". These eleven words will appear on every assessment that the students take this year. By the end of the year, the students will know these words inside and out. Essential Vocabulary List biome: a region of the world defined by its climate and by the plants and animals that live there
biotic: living
classification: the sorting of things into groups of similar items
conservation: The careful use of resources so that they'll last as long as possible
climate: the average of all weather conditions in an area over a period of time
inertia: the tendency of matter to resist a change in its state of motion
kingdom: the largest and most general classification, or grouping of living things
plate tectonics: the theory that Earth's crust is divided into plates that are always moving
renewable resource: resources that can be replenished within thirty years
nonrenewable resource: resources that cannot be replenished within thirty years
